Gargle vocalizations of black-capped chickadees: test of repertoire and video stimuli
Article Abstract:
Black-capped chickadees perceive the image of a gargling chickadee as a potential rival and produce aversive responses. A study using the video images of black-capped chickadee and the audio recordings of three gargle types shows that black-capped chickadees produce strongest aversive response to the image of a bird paired with a multiple-gargle vocal signal. Presentation of a vocal stimuli without a video image elicits only low response in the respondent. A video image paired with single gargle stimulus is less effective than that paired with three types of stimuli.

Early social tutoring influences female sexual response in white-crowned sparrows
Article Abstract:
A laboratory study of male song was done to determine the sexual response of female white-crowned sparrows exposed to a change in the learning model of a song during early ontogeny. The findings showed that the females favored the song dialect heard during the first 50 days of life, suggesting that female reproductive behavior was more spurred by the tutoring dialect of the female's early experience than by their later experience.

Once-pilfered cache sites not avoided by black-capped chickadees
Article Abstract:
Black-capped chickadees use pilfered cache sites during subsequent food-storing activities. Evolution of short-term memory for pilfered sites may be prevented by high loss and many potential sites in the wild. A study shows that the loss of cached food to robbers is high in natural populations. These observations can be useful in analysing spatial memory in food-storing birds.
