Genetic modification of heterochromatic association and nuclear organization in Drosophila
Article Abstract:
The insertion of heterochromatin into a euchromatic gene causes position-effect variegation in Drosophila melanogaster. The insertion also results in association of the gene with heterochromatin. Proteins responsible for the formation of heterochromatin affect the interphase nuclear position of a chromosomal region. Heterochromatin and the proteins offer a structural framework for the interphase nucleus. A study uses fluorescent in situ hybridization to interphase diploid nuclei.

A highly active synthetic mammalian retrotransposon
Article Abstract:
Bypassing of the transcription through L1 defect by synthesizing the open reading frames of L1 from synthetic oligonucleotides, altering 24% of the nucleic acid sequence without changing the amino acid sequence is reported. Further a comparison between the activity of the synthetic mouse l1 retrotransposons with wild-type human and mouse L1 in mouse cells is presented.
