Genome effort 'still in need of support'
Article Abstract:
Leaders of the publicly funded Human Genome Project have responded sharply to suggestions that their work may be redundant in the light of a recently announced private project to sequence the complete human genome. The director of the US National Institutes of Health, Harold Varmus, has said that the Human Genomes Project will be potentially more valuable than the private research venture between laboratory equipment maker Perkin-Elmer and genome researcher J. Craig Venter.

Human genome deadline cut by two years
Article Abstract:
The advisory council of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has approved a plan to complete the human genome sequencing by 2003, ahead of the original target by two years. NHGRI director Francis Collins believes that the new timetable is essential and to achieve it the proportion of the institute's budget spent on sequencing will increased to 60-65% from the current 45%.
