Geographic isolation of Hector's dolphin populations described by mitochondrial DNA sequences
Article Abstract:
New Zealand Hector's dolphin populations are more susceptible to extinction than other species. Their low dispersal rate of females creates marked segregation of maternal lineages, as revealed by mitochondrial DNA sequence research. This biological factor therefore makes Hector's dolphin populations significantly more vulnerable to fisheries-related mortality, such as beachcast- or gillnet-catching.

Evolutionary distinctiveness and status of the endangered Lake Eacham rainbowfish (Melanotaenia eachamensis)
Article Abstract:
The species boundaries between the Lake Eacham rainbowfish (Melanotaenia eachamensis) and the eastern rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida splendida) have been incorrectly drawn, according to a study of mtDNA, although the two are distinct species. The Lake Eacham rainbowfish had been thought to be extinct in the wild, but a genetically divergent population has been identified.

The effects of UV-B radiation on toad mortality in mountainous areas of central Spain
Article Abstract:
Toad mortality rates in central Spain are exacerbated by ultraviolet radiation. Research shows that exposure to UV-B radiation has a significantly negative impact on amphibian embryos and egg layers, interfering with toad reproduction capabilities. Exposure also weakens egg and embryo defenses against fungi, another factor contributing to population mortality rates.
