German state challenges faculty reappointments
Article Abstract:
Hans Joachim Meyer, research minister for the East German Lander of Saxony, terminated the services of 13 professors suspected of cooperating with the DDR's former secret police. The professors appealed to the court and were reemployed against Meyer's wishes. Armin Ermisch had been reinstated at Leipzig university, but he is not happy working there as he is not allowed independent work.

Genetic patent singles out Jewish women
Article Abstract:
The European Patent Office (EPO) on 29 June 2005 has upheld a patent in which Ashkenazi Jews would have to pay for the screening for a particular type of breast-cancer gene. This racial discrimination has raised concerns over the Europe's rules for gene patenting.
