Germline transmission of genetically modified primordial germ cells
Article Abstract:
Chicken primordial germ cells (PGCs) can be isolated, cultured and genetically modified while maintaining their commitment to the germ line. Chicken PGCs can be induced in vitro to differentiate into embryonic germ cells that contribute to somatic tissues, and retention of the commitment of PGCs to the germ line after extended periods in culture and after genetic modification combined with their capacity to acquire somatic competence in vitro provides a new model for developmental biology.

Soma-germline interactions coordinate homeostasis and growth in the Drosophila gonad
Article Abstract:
A demonstration that during gonad development in the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster the proliferation of primordial cells (ICs) that contact them are coordinated by means of a feedback mechanism composed of a positive signal and a negative signal is presented. The homeostasis and coordination of growth between soma and germ line in the larval ovary is achieved by using a sensor of primordial germ cell (PGC) numbers coupled to a correction mechanism inhibiting PGC proliferation.

Somatic control of germline sexual development is mediated by the JAK/STAT pathway
Article Abstract:
A demonstration revealing that the janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway provide a sex-specific signal from the soma to the germ line in Drosophila embryonic gonads is presented. The findings provide direct evidence that the JAK/STAT pathway mediates a key signal from the somatic gonad that regulates male germline sexual development.
