Gradually escalating fights and displays: The cumulative assessment model
Article Abstract:
Antagonistic encounters between animals can continue for long periods of time. Extended encounters are examined using a cumulative assessment model (CAM), based on the cumulative sum of an opponent's actions. The well established sequential assessment model (SAM) predicts that contestants differ from each other and each maintains a constant intensity. The CAM is particularly relevant to ritualized fights, but could also be applied to display without physical contact.

Ways to test stochastic dynamic programming models empirically
Article Abstract:
Techniques are presented for the empirical testing of stochastic dynamic programming models, using a model of the daily singing routine of birds as the main example. The selection of factors to test or predict is important in order to avoid unnecessary averaging.
