Habitat Conservation Plan for sea turtles
Article Abstract:
The Fish and Wildlife Service urged Volusia County, FL, to develop a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and apply for an incidental take permit for sea turtles to protect them from nocturnal beach drivers. The County finally decided to draw up an HCP after it was sued by two locals in 1995 to protect nesting beaches against beach driving and artificial lighting. The HCP not only established such zones as Natural Beach Areas, Transitional Areas and Urban Areas for the protection of sea turtles, a beach lighting management plan was also drawn up to address lighting problems within the county.

Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
Article Abstract:
The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge is located within a stretch of beach on the barrier islands of the counties of Brevard and Indian River in Florida. A popular nesting area for loggerheads and green sea turtles, the refuge is frequented by scientists who study the nesting activities of sea turtles. Areas near and around the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge are also home to other endangered and rare species, making it imperative for the remaining available lands around the area to become a part of the refuge to ensure the protection of these species.

Turtles dig the dark
Article Abstract:
Artificial beach lighting such as exterior lights on beachside balconies and oceanfront rooms is contributing to the increase in sea turtle hatchling deaths. The blinding lights deter female sea turtles from digging nests in beaches, disorient hatchlings and attract them to the wrong direction, making them vulnerable to predators. The Fish and Wildlife Service has already implemented legislation encouraging facilities to turn off lights to end the 'light pollution' in nesting beaches.
