Habitat characteristics of American woodcock nest sites on a managed area in Maine
Article Abstract:
The characteristics of the habitat surrounding 89 nests of American woodcock and 100 randomly chosen areas on Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Maine were measured. At nest sites, densities of deciduous saplings were greater while those of coniferous saplings were lower than at random sites. Other observations include lower basal area, greater densities among shrub stems and shorter tree height. Although habitat characteristics around first-nest sites did not vary, those around sites of renests varied from sites of first nests.
