High-risk physics
Article Abstract:
Pier Oddone, the 60-year old physicist is expected to be the fifth director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, or Fermilab, a 2,100-person government facility located in Batavia on the edge of the Illinois prairie. He plans to make Fermilab the home to a newer, bigger accelerator called the International Linear Collider, which would be the largest collider, capable of smashing electrons together at energies of 500 billion electronvolts (eV).

Just around the corner
Article Abstract:
Physicists are ready to build an international fusion experiment ITER aimed to produce the first nuclear fusion-generated electricity on Earth. A big uncertainty with ITER's Tokamak design is the proliferation of helium inside the reactor and scientists are also anxious about the outcome of the interaction between amounts of hot helium with the rest of plasma.
