Homeosis and intestinal tumours in Cdx2 mutant mice
Article Abstract:
The loss of one Cdx2 allele leads to the development of an anterior homeotic shift of the spine and multiple intestinal adenomatous polyps in mice. Skeletal analysis of Cdx2 heterozygotes showed an anterior homeotic shift of the cervical and thoracic vertebra coupled with rib abnormalities. Examination of the gut of Cdx2 mutants also revealed the presence of multiple adenomatous polyps, particularly in the proximal colon.

Second step to retinal tumours
Article Abstract:
Retinoblastoma is a childhood cancer of the retina, one of the few cancers for which the initiating genetic lesion is known but how it enables the cancer to evade controls on cell division was unclear till recently. Scientists have identified mutations affecting a growth regulatory pathway, and have shown that increased expression of MDMX can promote tumour development in genetic models of retinoblastoma in mice.

Widespread requirement for Hedgehog ligand stimulation in growth of digestive tract tumours
Article Abstract:
A wide range of digestive tract tumours, including most of those originating in the oesophagus, stomach, biliary tract and pancreas, but in the colon, display increased Hh pathway activity, which is suppressible by cyclopamine, a Hedgehog Hh pathway antagonist are discussed.
