How the Galaxy keeps its halo
Article Abstract:
The huge Galactic halo of the Milky Way, containing dark matter and visible gas, is a reservoir for stellar and gaseous debris thrown out of the disk. The galactic halo forms a cocoon around the Galaxy's disk and stabilizes it. The Perseus chimney appears to be one of the many disk-halo conduits in the Milky Way. Radio surveys indicate the presence of a large number of shells and vertical structures that are probably of superbubble origin. The exact number of superbubbles that exist and the number that break into the halo are, however, unknown.

Intergalactic pollution
Article Abstract:
Cowie and Songaila report new data from the High Resolution Spectrometer on the Keck telescope, that suggests that low-density intergalactic medium (IGM) is more metal-rich than previously thought. They investigated spectra of six quasars at redshifts z greater than 3, seeking weak absorption lines. It was found that the C IV/H I abundance ratio is around the same in all gas clouds, appearing to go against the theory that void gas should be pristine.

Hot pursuit of missing matter
Article Abstract:
Astronomers are going to extraordinary lengths in the quest to calculate the ordinary matter in the Universe. The latest initiative has probed hot gas in intergalactic space by means of an X-ray lighthouse.
