Article Abstract:
The UK government's plans to establish a Food Standards Agency represent significant progress towards ensuring that advice on food safety will be drawn up at a distance from the interests of food producers. However, there is still uncertainty about how the agency's research programme will be established. Science will play a significant part in the agency's activities, and assessments of food standards and safety will be made using the highest quality scientific advice. However, it will be vital for the agency to have the right leadership.
