Economic geography, forest distribution, and woodpecker diversity in Central Europe
Article Abstract:
Woodpecker diversity shows a negative correlation with urbanization in a study of 20 central European countries. Treating woodpecker diversity as an indicator of biodiversity, a causal link is supported between biodiversity declines and landscape degradation associated with technological development. Woodpecker species that depend on temperate forests are especially vulnerable to human-generated ecological changes.
