In tune with the forest
Article Abstract:
The Wildlife Conservation Society has helped train the local people of Gabon in conservation techniques and research at the Lope Reserve. Training involves studies in botony and animal censuses, and field research brings the workers in contact with gorillas, chimpanzees, and elephants. The project, started by the European Economic Community in 1992, is expected to lead to continued conservation of the reserve and surrounding areas.

A BaAka net hunt: like their ancestors, the BaAka rely on the forest
Article Abstract:
The BaAka, an indigenous people of the Central African Republic, survive by participating in communal net hunting. Net hunting involves placing nets in a circle to capture animals, mostly antelopes, as they run from the hunters. Net hunting strengthens the bonds of the community but encroachment into the forests by logging and agricultural interests is hurting the BaAka's ability to sustain their way of life.

Hunting with snares
Article Abstract:
Animal snares are illegal, yet still are the most commonly used method for hunting in the African forests. Snares are relatively cheap compared to guns and the penalty is less stringent if found by a game guard. Snares allow the hunters to both feed themselves and make money at local markets, but the environmental impact can be costly.
