Increase in C3 plant water-use efficiency and biomass over Glacial to present CO2 concentrations
Article Abstract:
Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels since the last glacial maximum about 18,000 years ago has resulted in increased biomass and efficiency of water-use in carbon 3 (C3) plants. C3 plants including oats, wild mustard and wheat, were compared with C4 grasses under conditions simulating the atmospheric CO2 concentrations since the last glacial maximum. Water-use efficiency and above-ground biomass of the C3 plants were found to increase linearly with CO2 concentration. Models of the global carbon cycle and its climatic correlates must take into account these effects.

Contribution of Southern Ocean surface-water stratification to low atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the last glacial period
Article Abstract:
Nitrogen-isotope preserved in Southern Ocean sediments, together with geochemical tracers for settling biogenic matter fluxes, reveals patterns of earlier nutrient supply to to phytoplankton in the region. The reduction of the CO2 leak from ocean to atmosphere through higher surface-water stratification at the Polar Front, contributed more to decreased CO2 concentrations than increased export of organic carbon to deep waters from the surface, during the last glacial period.

A previously unrecognized late-glacial cold event in eastern North America
Article Abstract:
A decrease in sediment's organic content and a lighter coloration at 12 lake sites analyzed in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia reveal the possibility of a small late-glacial cold event predating the Younger Dryas in North America. This event has previously gone undetected because it is evident in only 7 centimeters (cm) of sediment in Maritime Canada while conventional research involves five to 10 cm intervals.
