Increased Australian wheat yield due to recent climate trends
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable attention given to the possibility that future climate changes could affect agriculture. Climate trends over the past few decades should be assessed to evaluate such influences. The contribution of climate trends in Australia to substantial wheat yield increases since 1952 are examined, with non-climatic influences removed. Residuals are used to calculate quantitative links between variations in climate and yield. It was found that climate trends contributed to 30-50% of increased wheat yields, with the rise in minimum temperatures being a dominant factor.

A comparison of observed climatic changes in the 20th century with those predicted to be caused by changes in carbon dioxide, sulphate aerosols and stratospheric ozone levels provides evidence for the effect of human activity on climate. A study incorporates the combined effect of anthropogenic forcings, and studies latitudinal and vertical temperature distribution. A climate model shows stratospheric cooling and tropospheric warming. The Second Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change also provides evidence of anthropogenic influence on climate.

Article Abstract:
Mixed views have been expressed about research indicating that changes in minimum temperature had the most significant impact on changes in Australian wheat yields in the period 1952 to 1992, while rainfall change had little impact. It can be argued that these findings should be interpreted cautiously. Indeed, the conclusion may not be correct at all. However, it is also possible to argue that, regardless of possible data errors, climate trends seem to have led to increased Australian wheat yield.
