Industry backs 'downsizing' public research, but not joint projects
Article Abstract:
Industrial directors in the US have mixed feelings about the proposed cuts in government subsidies for industrial research and development programs. Many are hopeful that the cuts would compel program directors to be more heedful of waste and financial frugality in their departments, but many fear that a loss of government subsidies will mean an end to fruitful industrial research. Most research departments conduct studies which results would be difficult to quantify to boards of directors.

Roche pledges independence to new institute
Article Abstract:
Hoffman-La Roche, the Swiss pharmaceutical company, has promised autonomy to the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology which has been recently shifted from Nutley, NJ, to Stanford, CA. The new institute, which still lacks a director, will have the independence to pursue basic research. Researchers at the institute are, however, skeptical about the promises offered by the management and claim that the transfer of the institute involves personal and financial reasons.
