Inhibition of natural killer cells by a cytomegalovirus MHC class I homologue in vivo
Article Abstract:
Herpesviruses are able to set up persistent infection in the host by protecting themselves from the immune system using a variety of different mechanisms. Some herpesviruses that are comparable to host immune modulators have been found and are thought to be involved in viral evasion of the host's immune response. Analysis of the murine and human cytomegalovirus genome discloses the presence of a viral major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class 1 homologue and shows that the viral MHC class 1 homologue aids immune evasion by interfering with natural-killer cell-mediated clearance.

Pol of gag-pol fusion protein required for encapsidation of viral RNA of yeast L-A virus
Article Abstract:
The Gag protein can form virus particles even when the gag gene is not fused with the pol gene, but it cannot package the viral single-stranded RNA genome. However, only the N-terminal quarter of the Pol region is required for encapsidation of the viral RNA. This part of the Pol region is most likely distinct from the RNA polymerase domain. These results accord well with a model of L-A virus encapsidation.

Envelope's letters boxed into shape
Article Abstract:
Two new studies detail the proposed crystal structure of the gp120 surface glycoprotein of the HIV01 envelope. The two groups confirm what has generally been conjectured about the topology of gp120. The new information on the structure of gp120 is another step towards developing an HIV-1 vaccine.
