Inter- and intra-sexual selection : the role of song in a lek mating system
Article Abstract:
In lek mating systems, birds' song plays an important role in mating and in territory defense. Results of a study on ochre-bellied flycatcher indicated that male birds' song helps them to attract mates as well as defend their territory from intruding males. Six male birds' whose voice was temporarily muted suffered greater number of intrusions in their territories than normal birds and majority of them lost their territory to the intruders. Thus, male flycatchers songs affect intra- and inter-species interaction.
