Interferon spurs growth of Japanese biotechnology
Article Abstract:
Widespread use of the drug interferon to treat hepatitis C in Japan is helping to expand the biotechnology industry there. Profits from interferon are forecast to account for 1/3 of the country's biotechnology market in 1993. Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals' sales comprise 1/3 of this lucrative market, the biggest share. Interferon, though developed as an anticancer drug, is being used due to the prevalence of the hepatitis C virus in Japan. Reuse of needles and lack of screening probably caused this prevalence, while Japan's drug pricing system encourages hospitals to inflate interferon's price.

Kobe disaster divides earthquake researchers
Article Abstract:
The unforeseen occurrence of the disastrous earthquake in Kobe, Japan, triggered serious debates in political and scientific circles on earthquake research in Japan, specifically the earthquake prediction program. The government recommends a nationwide extension of the prediction program while earthquake researchers want more funds and efforts to be directed into basic seismological research.
