Internet growth - boom or bust?
Article Abstract:
The unprecedented growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web has affected the performance of the network as it has become congested with data. Nearly 30 mil computers are connected to the Internet and 76,000 servers are connected to the World Wide Web. The tremendous growth of Internet is due to the Internet Protocol that allows communication between any computer and communication system. Internet service providers are considering the use of regional caches and restricting access to work-related areas to cope with the ever increasing service.

US plans for virtual laboratories by Internet
Article Abstract:
A program to create a high-speed computer network that will enable US scientists to perform activities that are impossible to execute properly on the current Internet will be undertaken by the US National Science Foundation. These activities include collaborations using virtual laboratories and remote-control manipulation of instruments. Called 'Connections to the Internet,' the project is also expected to spur technologies that would link this planned high-speed network onto the existing Internet.

Governments urged to back Internet use
Article Abstract:
The leaders of 27 industrialized nations agreed to encourage and control the use of Internet for research purposes at the Global Research Village conference held at Helsingor, Denmark in Jun 1996. The participants supported the need to provide adequate network infrastructure, telecommunication facilities, and develop uniform legal and commercial processes for Internet usage. The funding of an extra bandwidth in the Internet by the governments was both supported and opposed by the participants.
