Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?
Article Abstract:
A new study shows that women with low waist-to-hip ratios (WHR) are not universally preferred by males of all cultures, as previously thought. A study of the preferences of men from a culturally isolated population in Matisgenka indigenous people in southeast Peru shows that their WHR preferences are very different from US males. The WHR preferences of Matisgenka males ranked female figures first by weight and then by WHR. An overweight female with a high WHR was the preferred choice. It is concluded that some presumed invariant standards may be malleable when isolated populations are taken into account.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-97)
Article Abstract:
Jacques-Yves Cousteau, an explorer and film-maker, died recently of heart disease. He had a reputation as a businessman, able to find money to finance his expeditions, with all proceeds going towards exploration and film production. He trained as a naval officer, and was involved in the invention of an autonomous diving system, waterproof cameras, and underwater lighting systems. Cousteau felt that the exploration of the unknown was the essence of the scientific process.
