'Japan's scientists must learn to take action.'
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government has made available significant amounts of additional public funding for science since the mid-1990s. However, scientists still work in very poor conditions, and the problem of renovating Japan's science infrastructure remains to be tackled. The ministries and agencies responsible for science have failed to focus on Japan's overall needs, while scientists have made the mistake of passively accepting poor working conditions.

Japanese scientists begin closed debate on size of contribution to SSC
Article Abstract:
Japan's Council of Science and Technology started holding closed-door hearings in Sep 1992 on how much money the country should give to the US Superconducting Super Collider project. The council, which consists of 210 academics led by Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa, will try to decide by the end of 1992 whether the SSC is worth a proposed Japanese investment of $2 billion. Some Japanese scientists fear that the SSC will divert funds from domestic science.

Japan's life sciences take integrated road
Article Abstract:
The Council for Science and Technology in Japan wants to promote life sciences, integrating the study of human genetics, cancer, developmental biology and brain science. This could mean the development of medical, food and information industries based on life science research. This is a departure from the focus on molecular biology in the life sciences in the country.
