Japan's MITI opens domestic R&D projects to foreign participation
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) has promoted Japanese cooperation with foreign firms in national research projects, since 1989. These projects include the development of engines for hypersonic transport, micromachine technology, alternative energy sources and others. Language and organizational differences have posed some difficulties to this cooperation, and MITI had to revise Japan's intellectual property law to accommodate foreign involvement, but foreign corporations have indeed become involved in Japanese research.

Big increase for MITI budget emphasizes energy technology
Article Abstract:
Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) submitted research budget requests for FY 1993 in Aug 1992 that totaled 301.3 billion yen, a 16% increase over FY 1992's budget. The requests include 142 billion yen, or $1.1 billion, for research on cutting carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage. MITI also asked for funding for its new fifth-generation computer effort. The Finance Ministry and Diet will probably grant most of these requests. In addition, the budget for Japan's Science and Technology Agency will grow by almost 10%.
