Language that dare not speak its name
Article Abstract:
The English-speaking media only had harsh criticisms of proposals by the governing board of the Oakland Unified School District in California to recognize African American English, the dialect used by most of pupils. Their comments are unfounded, since African American English is a regular and stable dialect that follows rules of grammar and pronunciation. Although it is remarkably different from standard English, it cannot be called bad standard English. Media also erred in believing that the board planned to make African American English a school subject, as the proposals were merely about making it a medium of instruction.
