Largest subunit of Drosophila transcription factor IID directs assembly of a complex containing TBP and a coactivator
Article Abstract:
The molecular cloning and initial functional analysis of the largest TATA-binding protein-associated factor in Drosophila is reported. TATA-binding protein (TBP) and associated factors (TAF) are components of TFIID, an RNA polymerase II transcription factor. The Drosophila TAF has the ability to form a complex with recombinant TBP and another type of TAF. This indicates that there are specific interactions between TBP and TAFs which are part of the RNA polymerase transcriptional machinery.

The tell-tail trigger
Article Abstract:
A kinase that phosphorylates RNA polymerase II (Pol II) stimulates the synthesis of RNA after it has formed a stable complex at the promoter. Hence this kinase, identified as general transcription factor H, plays a key role in eukaryotic genetic transcription. Hua Lu and colleagues as well as other research teams have ascertained that this kinase functions as a specific carboxyl-terminal domain that acts on both forms of Pol II. Other kinases influencing transcription may exist.

The dTAF 80 subunit of Drosophila TFIID contains Beta-transducin repeats
Article Abstract:
Sequence analysis of the dTAF II 80 subunit of Drosophila TFIID indicates that the latter contains Beta-transducin repeats. Furthermore, this particular subunit was found to have sequence similarities with the Arabidopsis gene, COP 1. Putting up the subunit in vitro with the rest of the TFIID complex showed that dTAF II 80 can only integrate with the entire complex if the other tightly associated factors are preassembled.
