Letter from Rwanda
Article Abstract:
The security of the Nyungwe Forest Conservation Project, Rwanda, run by the Wildlife Conservation Society since 1984, is threatened. The violence that followed the assassination of President Juvenal Habyarimana in April 1994 suspended all American operations in the region. The fact that many of the guides are former poachers or honeymen aggravates the issue. Martin Sindikubwabo, a tracker and guide, organized a committee to patrol the area and control poaching. Plans for enhancing Nyungwe's tourism potential are discussed.

Uganda revisited: a look at the changes two decades can bring
Article Abstract:
Murchison Falls Park in Uganda, once a tourist draw and haven for wildlife, is once again under responsible control after twenty years of political upheaval left it neglected. Hippos, elephants and many other large vertebrates appear to have survived, with only the rhino disappearing from the region. It is surprising that the area has done so well considering the large amount of poaching that occurred there. There is now a long-term plan to re-establish the park as one of the world's great nature reserves.

Letter from Uganda
Article Abstract:
The role of forest-dwelling elephants in reforestation is carried out in two different ways. By moving through a wooded area, elephants open up pathways that allow sunlight to reach seedlings and saplings growing on the forest floor. Elephants also eliminate swallowed seeds in their dung, increasing the germination of tree species throughout a wider region.
