Life's downs and ups
Article Abstract:
Kirchner and Weil have analyzed the Phanerozoic record, showing that the peak origination rates of new taxonomic groups lag extinction pulses by 10 million years. They did not concentrate on major extinctions, but cross-correlated peaks in extinction and origination, based on the compendia of the fossil-record ranges of two marine taxonomic groups, families and genera, during the Phanerozoic

Pervasive density-dependent recruitment enhances seedling diversity in a tropical forest
Article Abstract:
Species identities of 386,027 seeds in lowland, moist forest in the Republic of Panama, were compared with the identities of 13,068 seedlings from adjacent plots. Recruit seedling diversity was much higher than seed diversity.
