Long-term spatial memory in Clark's nutcracker, Nucifraga columbiana
Article Abstract:
Clark's nutcrackers show remarkable long-term memory of places where they have cached seeds. Birds' ability to recall hiding places was tested at 11, 82, 183 and 285 days and results indicated that birds can recall the location of cached seeds even after 285 days. However, birds locating the cache after 285 days made significantly higher number of errors than those searching after 183 days. Nutcrackers depend on cached food during winter and spring and rely on their long-term spatial memory to recall the position of the hidden food.

The use of local and global cues by Clark's nutcrackers, Nucifraga columbiana
Article Abstract:
Clark's nutcrackers, Nucifraga columbiana, are sensitive to global cues in searching stored food. A series of experiments involving the location of buried seeds also reveal the birds' sensitivity to landmark displacement as shown by the resulting shift in behavior patterns. Their different behavior patterns in searching for stored food during the tests may indicate that the birds treat parallel and perpendicular movements differently.

Returns to emptied cache sites by Clark's nutcrackers, Nucifraga columbiana:a puzzle revisited
Article Abstract:
A study exploring the return to old cache sites by Clark's nutcrackers was conducted using two experiments. Thefirst experiment validated the use of a cluster technique to measure memory effects. The second experiment explored the behavior in detail. Results indicate that the nutcrackers would return to good caches and avoid bad ones. Also, they explored other caches before returning to known plundered caches.
