Factors limiting mallard brood survival in prairie pothole landscapes
Article Abstract:
A number of factors are likely to contribute to higher survival of mallard broods when seasonal ponds are abundant. These include the fact that ducklings are less vulnerable to aquatic predators that prefer permanent water. Water conditions also have an impact on food availability for mallard broods.

Factors affecting gadwall brood and duckling survival in Prairie Pothole landscapes
Article Abstract:
Research on gadwall waterfowl populations in the Prairie Pothole region of Canada and North Dakota shows that seasonal wetland availability and predation prevention are key to gadwall survival. Implications for habitat management are discussed.

Mallard brood movements, wetland use, and duckling survival during and following a prairie drought
Article Abstract:
The behavior and duckling survival of mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) during the 1988-1992 major drought in the prairie pothole region of Eastern Dakota, US as well as during the first two years of the 1993-94 wet period was studied to aid informed decision-making regarding their conservation and management. Results indicated that brood and duckling survival were higher during the wet period and these were influenced by mallard brood movements.
