Measuring distance in two dimensions
Article Abstract:
Von der Emde and team have examined depth perception in fish, studying weakly electric fish and the way they can establish whether objects appear small due to distance, or to size. The fish do appear to be able to assess distance, whatever the size of objects. The researchers identified a combination of parameters that were linked to the distance of objects, and this is the extent to which an electrical image is fuzzy in relation to maximum amplitude.

Measuring the onset of locking in the Peru-Chile trench with GPS and acoustic measurements
Article Abstract:
A seafloor deformation data is presented from the submerged South America plate obtained from a combination of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and acoustic transponders. It is estimated that the measured horizontal surface motion perpendicular to the 6 km deep Peru-Chile trench is consistent with a model having no slip along the thrust fault between 2 and 40 km depth.
