Mixed reaction greets new gene patent proposals from Brussels
Article Abstract:
The EC Commission has changed its policy on the issuing of patents for biotechnology inventions. Specifically, the Commission urged member nations to ponder the ethics of allowing living animals to be patented. The Commission also suggested that farmers not be required to pay license fees on genetically engineered seeds and that patents not be allowed for genes when their biological role has not been determined. Animal rights advocates complained that the policy proposal on animal patents was weak.

European patent for PCR enzyme clouded by Russian claim
Article Abstract:
A Russian scientist claimed that the Taq DNA polymerase, whose patent was acquired by the US biotechnology company, Cetus Corp, is similar to his thermostable enzyme, isolated from the bacterium thermus aquaticus. Hoffman-La Roche, the Swiss owned pharmaceutical company which bought the patent rights from Cetus in 1991, is having difficulty in securing European patent rights on Taq polymerase due to this. Roche insists that the Russian's enzyme is not identical to the enzyme discovered by it.
