Modules for molecules
Article Abstract:
New research on the glomeruli's role as a synaptic relay in the olfactory pathway was the subject of a meeting of molecular neurobiologists held in Tegernsee, Germany on Jun 9-11, 1992. Olfactory glomeruli assist in the identification of odors both in vertebrates and invertebrates by functioning as receptors for odor molecules. Participants learned of recent advances in understanding glomerular physiology such as the response properties of mitral cells. The development of noninvasive markers for spatial activity patterns is a major goal of research.

Olfactory receptors guide axons
Article Abstract:
A study of the sensory epithelium for analyzing the axon transport reveals a correlation between critical residues in the binding pocket. It was also observed that odor molecule markers differentially interact with residues in a transmembrane binding pocket lying in the receptors. Different function of loop E2 containing 35 residues for different receptor subtype is observed. The role of loop E2 in guiding axons to their target glomeruli is discussed.

Smell images and the flavour system in the human brain
Article Abstract:
The advances made in the brain mechanisms of smell perception and its connection with eating behavior is discussed. The way in which odour molecules are represented in the form of odour images as the basis for smell perception, the importance of retronasal smell for flavour perception and the close relationships between the brain mechanisms for flavour and the brain systems for emotions and cravings are examined.
