Molecular bungees
Article Abstract:
The molecular structure of the muscle protein titin is observed to be similar to the mechanical properties of bungee cords. Using optical tweezers and atomic-force microscopy, scientists have discovered that, by stretching sarcomeres beyond their yield point, titin can be elongated up to four times its size. The stretching of the molecule is influenced by individual immunoglobulin domains.

Base stacking controls excited-state dynamics in A-T DNA
Article Abstract:
The vertical base stacking determines the fate of excited singlet electronic states in single- and double-stranded oligonucleotides composed of adenine (A) and thymine (T) bases. The femtosecond transient absorption signals for defined-sequence oligonucleotides, which differ in their extent of base stacking and base pairing in aqueous solution, are recorded.

Evan Snyder: Bunts, singles, and occasionally stealing a base
Article Abstract:
Evan Snyder, professor and director at the Burnham Institute in US explains that stem cells could be used to replace and preserve missing and dying nerve cells. He has demonstrated that in culture one could use enzyme-producing human stem cells to correct the deficiency underlying Tay-Sachs disease, conquering some adult diseases like Alzheimer's.
