Molecular fish on chips
Article Abstract:
Over 100,000 new gene sequences will be introduced between 1995 and 2005. Since a deluge of data is expected from the new gene sequences, the use of high-density oligonucleotide arrays for an analysis of genomic data has been reported. Meanwhile, molecular hybridization of polynucleotides has been used for several tests, including monitoring of messenger ribonucleic acid targets, analyzing of gene expression patterns in human cancer, screening for human disease-related mutations and molecular bar-coding. Since a chip for the diagnosis of some diseases will soon be available, DNA hybridization on chips may soon be able to diagnose modifications in genomes.

DNA analysis reveals the sex of infanticide victims
Article Abstract:
Some skeletal remains of 1- to 2-day-old infants in Roman Ashkelon were gathered to determine their gender by using deoxyribonucleic aid (DNA) analysis of the X ad Y alleles of the amelogenin gene. Since infanticide was an accepted method of disposing of unwanted female babies during the Roman Empire, it was expected that the remains would be from those of female babies. Extracting DNA from left femurs and using DNA amplification, it was revealed that 14 were males while only 5 were females. The study showed the efficiency of DNA analyses in revealing the gender of human skeletal remains.

Infanticide caused by hunting of male bears
Article Abstract:
Most models used to forecast the effect of hunting animal populations disregard the killing of males. A field study of brown bears shows that the harvesting of one adult male corresponds to that of killing 0.5-1.0 adult females. Immigrant males, replacing the resident male killed, may improve their reproductive success by killing existing cubs so that the time to the female's next conception is shortened.
