The 'Aping Science' report of the Committee on Animal Models in Biomedical Research found that research done by the Yerkes Primate Center (YPC) lacks scientific merit. YPC, a regional center that receives $13 million in federal funds yearly, experiments on great apes, including some 200 chimpanzees.

The monoclonal mandate

The use of the ascites method in producing monoclonal antibodies has been criticized for causing unnecessary pain and suffering in laboratory animals. The American Anti-Vivisection Society has filed a protest with the National Institutes of Health seeking a ban of the method.
