Moose dispersal and its role in the maintenance of harvested populations
Article Abstract:
Dispersal is an important consideration for moose management and the conservation of non-contiguous populations is largely maintained by juvenile dispersal. A new study in Quebec investigates the extent and timing of dispersal by young moose and identifies their relative contribution to the moose harvest. The results show large variations among individuals in dispersal distances, and that contribution of lightly harvested areas to their nearby areas is mainly because of yearling dispersal.

Moose movement rates along highways and crossing probability models
Article Abstract:
A spatial model to predict moose highway-crossing probability in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve, Quebec, and used as an index of moose-vehicle collision risk was developed. Results identified the preferred locations and movement rates of moose highway-crossing.

Management of roadside salt pools to reduce moose-vehicle collisions
Article Abstract:
Several roadside salt pools in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve of Quebec were managed so as to discourage moose from using them and thus reducing moose-vehicle collisions. The practice was found to be effective.
