Mortality patterns of white-tailed deer in Michigan's upper peninsula
Article Abstract:
Researchers used radiotelemetry to study the effects on white-tailed deer populations of mortality through both natural and hunting causes. The researchers tagged 95 deer in Michigan and analysed mortality results by cause, sex and age. Fifty-eight of the deer died over a three year period from 1992, with 26 of these deaths being caused by hunters. Mortality rates due to hunting were significantly higher for adult and yearling males which, when added to a higher non-hunting mortality rate for males, produces a female-dominated adult sex ratio.

Sex and age characteristics of harvested brown bears in the Oshima Peninsula, Japan
Article Abstract:
The sex and age characteristics of brown bears killed between 1983 and 1987 in the Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan are investigated. From interviews with hunters, it was found that den hunting killed ten times as much females with cubs as 'postemergence hunts' during the Jan.-May period. In addition, less females with cubs and more females with yearlings were harvested during spring than during summer and autumn.
