Movements of female black bears in relation to landscape vegetation type in southern Quebec
Article Abstract:
Black bear movement is strongly influenced by the distribution and abundance of vegetation and they are known to travel large distances if a particular food supply is seasonally abundant. A new study examines the relationship between movements of female black bears and vegetation distribution in the protected La Mauricie National Park in southern Quebec. Results suggest that females with access to maple-beech forests and early-successional hands did not wander outside their home areas and that their movements were influenced by the seasonal abundance of food.

Riparian forest strips as habitat for breeding birds in boreal forest
Article Abstract:
The influence of riparian forest strips on terrestrial wildlife was studied through a three-year experiment which surveyed bird abundance in several patches of riparian land. During the first year of the experiment in 1989, bird densities increased by 30-70% following a year of clear-cutting. In the succeeding years, however, bird densities began to expand at a slower rates than in 1989. The decreased expansion of bird densities was attributed to the small size of the riparian forest strips.
