US drops Imanishi-Kari investigation; Baltimore withdraws 'Cell' retraction
Article Abstract:
Immunologist Thereza Imanishi-Kari will not face prosecution for fraudulent scientific research after US prosecutors decided that the case against her was too convoluted for a jury to reach a verdict. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) investigated Imanishi-Kari for misconduct during research which she and co-worker David Baltimore reported in a 1986 issue of the periodical 'Cell.' Baltimore now regrets his decision in 1991 to retract the results reported in 'Cell'; he based this retraction on an NIH analysis of the data which Imanishi-Kari's attorney, Bruce Singal, has shown to be inadequate.

Robert Gallo forced off NIH stage after HHS vetoes public briefing
Article Abstract:
The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) instructed the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to call off a meeting scheduled for Jun 24, 1992 in which AIDS researcher Robert C. Gallo would have discussed allegations that he is guilty of misconduct. HHS counsel Michael Astrue sent a letter to Howard Temin, chairman of the National Cancer Advisory Board's AIDS subcommittee, advising that the meeting not take place because it went beyond the subcommittee's statutory authority and would be politically damaging. Both Temin and NIH director Bernadine Healy denounced HHS's action.
