NIH plans to begin AIDS drug trials at earlier stage
Article Abstract:
Recent findings have determined that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is active in the body in larger numbers much earlier than previously thought. As a result, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is planning to institute new policies geared toward earlier treatment of AIDS. AIDS activists welcomed the new findings, although they stated that the scientific community had been slow in elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease. However, Peter Duesberg, the main proponent of the idea that AIDS is not caused by HIV, remains unconvinced by the new findings.

Dispute over money may foil US AIDS vaccines trial
Article Abstract:
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) cannot afford to pay $10 million to Micro Genesys, the connecticut company which is the only US producer of gp-160, one of the three therapeutic AIDS vaccines. Frank Volvovtiz, president of Microgenesys insists on the payment before their company provides them with the vaccine. This dispute would lead to the collapse of an agreement between the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defence (DOD) to test therapeutic AIDS vaccines.

Physicians not fazed by AZT guidelines
Article Abstract:
An expert panel has counselled doctors to discuss with their patients and use their discretion before prescribing antiretroviral drugs, such as AZT, to HIV carriers. Doctors should consider an individual's needs and personal life style when prescribing AZT for patients with low CD4 counts. A national commission on AIDS criticized government officials and religious and community heads for taking inadequate measures to curb AIDS.
