Nanofabrication of solid-state Fresnel lenses for electron optics
Article Abstract:
Magnetic lenses for precision electron optics require large soft iron cylinders to focus an electron beam. These lenses are only convergent and therefore suffer from spherical aberration. Electrostatic lenses can be used, but are cumbersome. High brightness electron guns has meant that tightly focused electron beams can be used to drill holes in a few nanometres in size in some inorganic thin films. This approach has been used to made a compact solid-sate pixelated Fresnel lens for electron optics.

X-ray lenses near reality
Article Abstract:
A series of refractive lenses made by drilling small round holes in an aluminium block can be used to focus hard X-rays. The focal length can be shortened by a factor of N when N refractive lenses are used in series. The focused X-rays can be used for diffraction and spectroscopic studies of individual particles and can provide information on structure at atomic level. These lenses may find wide use in synchrotron sources and facilitate microanalytical techniques.
