Natural Community Conservation Planning: 1997 interim report
Article Abstract:
California's Natural Community Conservation Planning (NCCP) Act of 1991 aims to resolve conflicts that may arise between economic development projects and endangered species. This involves the protection of a multiple mix of species on a particular habitat while development is undertaken outside the habitat. The NCCP experience has so far shown that listings of endangered species, as well as public participation are crucial in habitat conservation planning. However, the program is still limited by local land-use factors and the lack of funding for land acquisition.

Life in a stone pool
Article Abstract:
Outcrop pools are found across the Piedmont region of the southeastern US and are hostile environments for most creatures and plants. The pools are found in the shallow depressions of granite outcrops and their soils are acidic and low in nutrients. Rare granite outcrop plants such as the black-spored quillwort and little amphianthus grow in the pools, but their habitats are threatened by quarrying. Some people regard the outcrops as dumping places, although some sites have been protected.
