Non-aqueous supramolecular assembly of mesostructured metal germanium sulphides from (Ge(sub4)S(sub10))(super4-) clusters
Article Abstract:
Microporous materials have extensive use as catalysts, sorbents and ion-exchange media. There are reports of various oxide-based mesoporous materials, and the challenge is to expand their scope beyond the oxides. CdS, SnS(sub2) and CdSe are the only non-oxide mesostructured composites reported. A new group of metal germanium sulphide mesostructured materials are reported, prepared by an assembly of adamantanoid cluster precursors. Such materials could have applications in detoxification of heavy metals in polluted water steams, sensors and semiconductor quantum anti-dot devices.

Varied pore organization in mesostructured semiconductors based on the [SnSe4]4- anion
Article Abstract:
Research is presented describing a synthetic structure that enables the arrangement of mesoporous semiconducting selenide materials based on the [SnSe4]4- anion with transition metals in the presence of cetylpyridinium surfactant molecules. The pore arrangements are affected by the metal used and the synthetic conditions, and include hexagonal, disordered wormhole and cubic phases.

Zero thermal expansion in YbGaGe due to an electronic valence transition
Article Abstract:
Results show that the YbGaGe compound, an electrically conductive intermetallic compound, displays nearly zero thermal expansion with negligible volume changes between 100 and 400K. This response is due to a valence transition in the Yb atoms. Materials with zero thermal expansion are used to prevent or reduce internal stresses in systems undergoing temperature fluctuations.
