Nuclear debate goes critical in Japan
Article Abstract:
The public is criticizing the Japanese government and the semi-public Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp (PNC) for their inefficient handling of a fire at a nuclear fuel recycling plant at the Ibaraki Prefecture. Ten hours after the fire has been extinguished, an explosion caused by volatile asphalt gases followed, which released low doses of radioactivity to the environment and exposed 37 PNC workers. Although Japan Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and the PNC president have publicly apologized for the slow response to the accident, the Japanese are still questioning the government's efficiency in crisis and nuclear management.

Staffing shortage threatens Japan's structural genomics
Article Abstract:
Because of a chronic staffing shortage, Japan's structural genomics industry and its synchrotron radiation facilities are suffering. Although there have been enormous increases in funding for structural genomics in Japan, the shortage of experimentalists, technicians, beamline specialists and specialized software engineers, is crippling the industry, and initiatives such as the one headed by Seiki Kuramitsu at Osaka University, call for increased automation as the answer to the supply problem.
