Nutrient consequences of salmon spread
Article Abstract:
It is well known that mature salmon at the end of a salmon run die and their bodies are recycled within the aquatic ecosystem. A new study seeks to trace the movement of released nitrogen from salmon corpses into plants by checking for increased values of the isotope delta15 N. The study in southeast Alaska shows elevated levels of delta15 N in muscle samples of deer mice, shrews, voles and squirrels in the areas surrounding rivers where salmon spawn. It is concluded that nutrients from dead salmon are passed along the food chain via local herbage, although other variables need to be investigated.

Green and pleasant trials
Article Abstract:
The existence of green and pleasant land in the world is explained by test hypothesis that proved that herbivore numbers are controlled by ranks of predators that keep their populations in check and inadvertently ensure that green plant production continues. It remains to be seen whether overgrazing would lead to the total destruction of vegetation on the small islands, and whether that would then lead to herbivore extinction followed by plant reinvasion and the establishment of a new order.

Better cycling in China
Article Abstract:
Past studies of energy flow and nutrient cycling have shown that the ecosystem concept can be applied in human-dominated activities. In a study of a Chinese farming village in Jiangsu province, China, J.Y Guo and A.D. Bradshaw demonstrate that an ecosystem approach can be utilized for a farming system. Changes made in the farming system increased total agricultural output by 25%. Processes can be quantified and consequences predicted through the ecosystem approach.
