Observation of shell structure in sodium nanowires
Article Abstract:
Research into shell effects in an open system has involved measuring oscillations in the statistical distribution of conductance values for contact cross-sections with as many as 100 atoms or more. A comparison of the energy levels for a three-dimensional spherical potential well and a two-dimensional cylindrical geometry provides an explanation of the link between the shell structure in clusters and in nanowires. It has been possible to establish a direct correspondence between preferential values for the conductance of histograms for sodium nanowires, and the cluster magic numbers.

Carbon nanotubule membranes for electrochemical energy storage and production
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that free-standing nanoporous carbon membranes can be created through the fabrication of template-synthesized carbon tubules. Template synthesis techniques can also be used to create highly ordered graphitic carbon nanotubes. The intercalation techniques may be useful in lithium-ion battery developments. Cyclic voltammogram graphs are shown.
