Odour similarities as a basis for discriminating degrees of kinship in rodents: Evidence from Mus spicilegus
Article Abstract:
A study to test the odour-genes covariance among kin groups in rodents in Mus spicilegus was performed using a habitation-generalization procedure designed to assess responses to similarities by using odours from males of different relatedness to the habituation odour donor. The study revealed that the degree of relatedness including kin recognition as mice responded to the similarities between odours of double cousins as compared to cousins, which clearly demonstrates the odour-genes covariance among close kin.
