Dynamical tunnelling of ultracold atoms
Article Abstract:
Research describing dynamical tunnelling observations of ultracold atoms is presented. In particular the behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an amplitude modulated standing wave is investigated.

Optical alignment and spinning of laser-trapped microscopic particles
Article Abstract:
Optically driven micromachines are possible with light-induced rotation of absorbing microscopic particles by transfer of angular momentum from light to the material. Developing high power in experiments is difficult due to overheating and unwanted axial forces, but this can be overcome in principle, by the use of transparent particles. An optical torque is shown to be induced on microscopic birefringent particles of calcite, and particles either become aligned, or they spin with constant rotation frequency.

Four-wave mixing with matter waves
Article Abstract:
Research into four-wave mixing has involved using Bragg diffraction of atoms from a moving optical standing wave to create the necessary three overlapping wavepackets, beginning from a Bose-Einstein condensate. Optical four-wave mixing needs coherent light sources to coherently create the generated wave, and a condensate is also vital for coherent generation of matter waves. There is a strong analogy between atom and optical four-wave mixing, but there are also significant differences. Particle, energy and momentum conservation restrict all matter four-wave mixing processes to configurations that can be seen as degenerate four-wave mixing in an appropriate moving frame.
